Kecak: The Exotic Dance of Bali

Who doesn’t know about Kecak? this is the famous dance in Bali. It is an exclusive performance of Balinese traditional dance which was created in 1930’s and performed by men. This dance has been developed with so many creations nowadays. Few people knows, especially for those from outside Bali, that this dance was originally a sacred dance but been modified into an entertaining one.
Kecak that is commonly known by people was kecak dance which draws the epic of Ramayana where Sita, Rama’s wife is kidnapped by Rahwana and also draws the assistance of Monkey’s Troop for Rama. Originally, Kecak was a sacred dance from sanghyang ritual that is a tradition where the dancer will be in a trance state. That dancer will communicate with the God, spirit and ancestors to convey their hope to the people.
Its recent development present as a story companion’s dance. Though music is an important part in accompany the dancers but in Kecak the music is produced from the voice of its Cak members –Kecak dancers- for about 50-70 people. They will produce the music with their voices combination; one will act as the tone conductor to decide high and low tone and another person will act as the story teller. Kecak dance doesn’t pay attention to the movement of the dancer but tend to the story and its voice combination.
